Columbia Sportswear: Starwars Jacket
Project: Columbia Sportswear Photography for Star Wars 2018 Jacket
Summary: This campaign is for Columbia’s 2018 Star Wars Parka Project. These parkas are a limited edition line that is particularly special because they are exact replicas of jackets worn by crew members behind the scenes while shooting Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. I had a wonderful opportunity to be their lead photographer as well as direct the overall mood of the campaign. All images were customer facing.
Role: Art Director/Photographer
On-Model: Working with junior models. Keeping the lighting consistent between two different skin tonalities. Photographing and ex- posing the jackets key features by capturing the different details of embroidery.
Product: Preparation of jackets as well as products being shot before they are put on model. Capturing photographs to fit Columbia’s aesthetic and standards for customer facing imagery without being too abstract. Maintaining consistent color in photographs to match model and off model.
Successes: Jackets were consistent throughout the entire shoot. Light shadows for the on-model shoot and dark shadows for the product shoot made the products look more compelling.
Take Away: As a photographer, I learned how to be consistent throughout my process in making compelling and interesting images across the board via on and off model. The biggest challenge with this project is that is the same creative team for on model and off-model images. I showed enough diversity in our creativity to bring to the table some compelling shots for the Star Wars launch.
