Nike: Art Direction
Project: Nike: SU2020 Blacklight SB Jankoski
Summary: For this campaign, Nike was launching images for SB Nike’s skateboard line. Their product design had innovative styles for their shoes with black light fabric on it. Our creative team were thrilled to come up with some fun mood-boards and ideas for this project. These images were meant only for B2B (business to business) to show what’s coming up at Nike.
Role: Art Direction, Editer
Challenges: It was a challenge to try and figure out the best way to showcase Nike’s products while highlighting the black light features without being too gimmicky. I wanted to bring on the mood of rave culture involving this. After speaking with the main designer about what inspired him to create him he talked a lot about the night culture in the skate scene and I wanted to emulate that in the project.
Successes: It is a lot easier to fake black light than to actually shoot black light with a camera. Coming up with the idea of a GIF to have it blink on and off was one of the best methods to show the black light feature. This process highlights the key features we wanted to present in the product.
Take Away: Creating the mood-boards is helpful for this project as well as pre-testing fabrics the day before for black lights. This project is simplistic but very effective in its execution.
